The phrase political left is typically applied to describe a liberal or a Democrat. Traditionally a liberal was someone who believed in the human rights of the individual. They wished to cut back the influence of the Church or religious groups without defying the conventions of the Constitution. They were normally linked to being the patriots of freedom and would appear, on paper at least, to be more tolerant and extra generous.
The political right alternatively would be used to describe somebody who was extra conservative in their outlook on life. In case a hostile situation arose in the Middle East for example, while the political left would be ready to work with the UN and try to attain a peaceful agreement, the right would typically advocate an armed response especially if they thought the USA was at risk.
The political right was often linked to being American patriots.
Generally, the Republicans would have been seen to support the army along with its veterans, although it is debatable if that is still the case. They believed in an entrepreneurial spirit, after all this is the USA where anyone can become wealthy if they believe in their dreams. With the latest financial downturn, there are lots of people who believe that individuals on the political right will likely support the capitalistic ideal at the expense of ordinary people's pensions and stock holdings.
Whether you see eye to eye or oppose with both party, it is more than obvious that there are severe viewpoints on both sides. As an example various conservatives believe that every individual ought to be responsible for their healthcare, education etc. After all if some can achieve something why can't everybody? They do not buy into the truth that some people just are not cut out to be entrepreneurs.
