As it seems there are a few requirements that need to be met prior to being certified. You must have finished one year of clinical experience, but there is more that should be done first. Before you will be qualified to take the test for certification to become an ultrasound technician, you have to complete either an associate degree course, or a bachelor's degree program.
Once the experience and educational requirement have been met, then there are no other roadblocks to being given the certification exam. Upon passing the examination, you will be recognized as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).
Being a certified ultrasound technician you can hope to make anywhere from the low $40k area to a little over $60k. In addition to this certification, there are 3 other certifications possible through further education, although one is reserved for actual physicians. They include Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT), and Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) certifications. When you have become certified you will be supposed to maintain a particular level of continuous education to meet the standards of the ARDMS.
